Landgoed Vilsteren
Netherlands
Campsite
A wooded natural campsite on the Landgoed Vilsteren estate, set in the forest about 400 metres south-east of the village of Vilsteren. Pitches are spacious, unnumbered and screened from one another by trees and shrubs, and the emphasis is on quiet, nature and good sanitary buildings. The site is part natural campsite (Green Book card required) and part seasonal camping field.

About the camp
Landgoed Vilsteren keeps camping deliberately low-key: you drive in, pick your own spot in the woods and put up the tent or caravan yourself. There is no reception to report to - the site warden simply comes by during your stay. Pitches carry no numbers or signposts, because the owners chose the natural look of a forest clearing over the tidy rows a numbered field makes; the trade-off is that you cannot reserve, so availability is checked by telephone. The rates include taxes and hot water, the showers need no coins, and payment is taken in cash or by card. Alongside the main campsite there are three separate, deliberately primitive group grounds in the forest south of the heath, with a water pump but no sanitary buildings - old-fashioned camping aimed at scouting groups that value seclusion. The campsite lies in the estate belt along the Overijsselse Vecht, walking and cycling country.
