Het Salamandertje

Netherlands

A small SVR campsite behind the owners' farmhouse at Ottoland, in the Alblasserwaard polder of Zuid-Holland, with room for 15 tents or caravans. Sanitary facilities are two shower rooms plus separate ladies' and gents' toilets. A holiday bungalow stands on its own camping field, and the family also runs the renovated barn Gasterij de Zwarte Schuur for groups of about 25 people.

About the camp

The camping lies at the back of the farm, in the middle of ditches and drainage watercourses and ringed by willows, so that campers still have a wide look out over the flat polder when they want it. Cows, sheep and frogs are the neighbours, and the owners describe the place as a quiet piece of classic Holland water country between the big rivers Lek, Merwede and Noord. Ton and Anja Hijmering run it as a base for cycling and walking straight from the door, among them the long-distance Pelgrimspad, and for exploring the polder from the water in a canoe or a small boat. The property also has a centrally heated bungalow on one of the fields, set a little apart without being cut off from the camp, with a south-facing outdoor sitting spot, and a completely renovated barn for family weekends, reunions and presentations.

Ottoland sits in the middle of the Alblasserwaard, a low Dutch polder landscape where water has the say, between the Lek, the Merwede and the Noord. The page names Slot Loevestein (reachable by bike or ferry), the silver town Schoonhoven and the windmills of Kinderdijk as sights a short distance away, and historic fortress towns nearby.
