Lodge 61
Netherlands · from €60 per night
Lodge 61 is an agro-ecological family farm at Brakeweg 61 just outside Medemblik in West-Friesland, a converted dairy farm run as a campsite since 1986: ten spacious pitches on a three-hectare private estate on the water, beside a row of lodges for two to fourteen people. The owners describe it as circular and self-sustainable, with their own energy, kitchen gardens, a food forest under construction, farm animals, a farm shop and the museum cafe 'de Meermin' in the old barn, which also houses the Historisch Museum Medemblik.

About the camp
The estate, Buitenplaats Medemblik, is deliberately small: ten wide, private pitches, no animation, no swimming pool, no five-star resort, and by the owners' account one of the quietest campsites in West-Friesland. Guests come for that quiet, and for the nature that brings it: birds, dragonflies and frogs, sheep grazing on the dike, open sailing water at the gate, and mosquitoes on warm summer evenings, which the site notes belong to the very nature its guests value. Breakfast is a daily buffet of farm produce, organic cheese, eggs and fruit from their own organic farm, served in the museum cafe or outside on the terrace. Canoes and SUP boards are rented on the grounds, and from the jetty the IJsselmeer is about ten minutes away, so you can also arrive under your own steam in a boat or canoe and spend the night in a lodge. Open all year.

- museum cafe 'de Meermin' and the Historisch Museum Medemblik in the farm buildings

The estate sits on open sailing water where land and water meet: the historic centre of Medemblik and the IJsselmeer beach are within walking distance, the first large lake about ten minutes away by boat. Around it lie the wide West-Frisian views, bulb fields in spring, dikes with grazing sheep and nature reserves shaped by centuries of dikes and drainage; some beaches stay shallow for a long way out, which the site recommends for children. Amsterdam is roughly a 30-minute drive.
